This page is about setting up your computer so that you can do client-side modding. Note: you'll have to install a few things on your computer.

Before going further, though, please remember that there is a lot of server-side modding that you can do without installing anything. So if you're new to modding or you're uncomfortable with the idea of installing software on your computer, you should do the badges here instead.

And if you don't know the difference between client-side modding and server-side modding. Here's a video that explains those concepts:

LearnToMod Mod

Requirements

  • Windows 7 or above
  • Java JRE 8
  • A clean Minecraft installation
  • A clean Forge 1.8 installation

The LearnToMod AlphaClient is a mod that we wrote to make it easier for you to run client-side mods. It is very new, but you can still do some cool stuff with it. Currently, Linux is not officially supported and there is no gaurentee LearnToMod will work. However, support for other platforms are coming very soon. Here are the steps to install it:

Client Installation

  1. Download the latest version of the LearnToMod Mod
  2. Make sure you have a clean Minecraft installation and backup your worlds. If you are not sure if your Minecraft is a clean installation, delete the .minecraft directory in %appdata% in Windows, and launch the Minecraft launcher once. Then, login and proceed to the next step.
  3. Make sure you have a clean Forge 1.8 installation from here.
  4. Copy the LearnToMod Mod jar file that you downloaded and put it in your minecraft/mods/ directory (like all other Forge mods).
  5. Open Minecraft and switch your Minecraft profile to "forge".
  6. Press play and when it asks for your mod, just put in your mod name from LearnToMod, like "sarah-myMod".
